 A wine-tasting evening with a difference, the Pochi ma Buoni (‘Small but Great’) rustic Italian pop-up at Cargo Road Wines Cellar Door is back on Saturday 15 August 2015. The intimate event for 30 people is aimed at celebrating the coming together of good people, good food and good wine for good times.

 Positioned as a ‘wild-style degustation dinner’, the menu features three courses of authentic Italian home-cooking based on providing warming and hearty winter fare. Each course will be paired by a wine from the Cargo Road Wines portfolio, with wine-maker James Sweetapple presenting the story behind each of the wines during each course.

 “This is all about showcasing wines in an informal and fun setting, so you get the real flavour of the wines being complemented with a hearty, home-cooked meal,” explains James. “Our focus for the evening is on creating an experience of good food and good wine in good company, very much like a private dinner party but with the added bonus of being in a wine cellar.”

 On the menu for the evening is a welcome glass with cheese platter; handmade pumpkin gnocchi with gorgonzola; lamb shanks in Cargo Road Wines Zinfandel with polenta; finishing with a homemade Tiramisu and dessert wine.

 These are all traditional Italian family recipes, handed down to cook for the evening, Paolo Picarazzi, from his grandparents. The menu features dishes that are meant to be shared in the darkest depths of winter, accompanied by excellent red wine and cheerful company.

 Pochi ma Buoni <pronounced: pokey-ma-bwonee> is a fun phrase used by youthful Italians to refer to an event that is small and select, but which attracts like-minded, gregarious people. Directly translated it means “only for the few, but very good”, however we like to explain it more simply as “small but great”.

 We invite you to join us for a festive winter evening at the Cargo Road Wines Cellar Door, 1064 Cargo Road, Lidster on Saturday 15 August at 7pm. Tickets are $70 + GST per person including food and wine, and available for purchase by emailing or calling 0428 656 100.

 About the Cook – Paolo Picarazzi

Paolo comes from Isola Del Lira (‘The Island of the River Liri’), a small village in the valley of the province of Frosinone, just an hour’s drive from Rome in Italy. Hailing from the ancient region of Ciociaria, this area has its own culture, dialect and traditions and is famous for being the birthplace of the Roman orator and philosopher, Cicero. Paolo’s family have lived in this region for centuries, and his grandparents cultivated vineyards and grew vegetables in the valley. Most of his cooking skills are thanks to his grandmother, Santina, and his grandfather Silvio taught him an appreciation of fine wine. Paolo has been a resident of Orange, NSW since June last year, and this is his first foray into sharing the wealth of Italian home-cooking recipes he has up his sleeve.

  About the Wine-Grower – James Sweetapple

Locally, James needs little introduction as the President of the annual FOOD Week festival and an active member of the Orange Region Vignerons Association (ORVA). James has spent subsequent years since taking on the management and wine-growing role at Cargo Road Wines to add to the vineyard’s successful portfolio and making it into a viable business. He’s an enthusiastic advocate of holistic vineyard management practices, and has a story to share behind every single wine he produces.
